After working on a document (i.e. every time you work on it), consider using the Search/Find function to delete unnecessary double spaces between words by entering two spaces using the space bar, and then going through the document. Then highlight all the text in the document, go to Tools and select Language, then go to UK or U.S. English, as the case may be. Open Tools again and go to Spelling and Grammar.
Make notes of inconsistencies or queries as you go through the document and, if needs be, use the Search/Find function again to address these.
